A made to measure staircase with a steel structure, hardwood treads and a glass balustrade typically runs £9,500 to £15,000. Cantilever designs sit higher again. Here the treads appear to grow out of the wall with no visible support, and pricing starts around £20,000.
Published starting prices are worth treating with care. Almost no staircase is ordered as a bare structure. Lighting, a feature step, landing guarding and the fitting itself get added on most projects. A quote that looks like the cheapest option at the enquiry stage often lands somewhere else once it is fully specified.
Bespoke Staircase Cost Breakdown
Every bespoke quote is built from several layers: the structure, the treads, the balustrade and the professional work needed to design and fit it. 1. The Structure and the Shape
The structural type is the largest single line in most quotes, and you commit to it before choosing anything else. A floating structure starts at £4,650. A zig-zag structure costs £5,128 and a central spine costs £5,489.
Shape is charged on top. A straight flight carries no surcharge. A single ninety degree turn adds £850 and a U shape adds £1,200, since both need additional steelwork and a landing. Multi-turn layouts are priced individually.
2. Treads, Balustrade and Handrail
Tread material is the most visible cost decision you will make, and it is charged per step. A typical domestic flight has 13 steps, so a small difference per step compounds fast.
- Solid ash: £190 per step
- Solid oak: £205 per step
- Natural walnut: £310 per step
Micro concrete sits above all three at £420 per step. Moving from ash to walnut across 13 steps adds £1,560, which is more than most people expect from a material swap.
Glass is priced per linear metre and measured along the rake rather than the vertical height. A 12mm toughened panel costs £380 per metre. A 13.5mm laminated panel costs £570 per metre. 3. Add-Ons and Professional Services
Add-ons are where a quote tends to drift away from the original estimate. They are optional, and they are also the details people notice first.
